Women age better than men.

That, at least, is what it looks like. Unless photoshopping and airbrushing is applied more frequently and liberally to photos of the fairer sex, we really are the fairer sex.

Have a look at Diane Lane when she was young:

…and now, twenty years later:

How about Jennifer Grey? The Dirty Dancing babe…

…has become even more beautiful:

Connie Selecca then:

…and now:

Yes, there are loads of lady film stars who don’t look as physically attractive now as they did twenty, thirty years ago.

Kathleen Turner is a rare one:

I want to make two things clear. In the first place, I tend to think most people are beautiful. I favour older faces, I suppose, because the lines experience draws on you are hugely attractive. I wouldn’t list Kelly McGillis with the ladies whom I consider to be as beautiful or more so than when they were young. Yet that’s thinking from a general point of view. Personally, I think she’s stunning:

In the second place, it was a job and a half to find any pictures of hot actresses from the eighties who are not either still gorgeous or even more beautiful than before.

With the gentlemen, it’s a different matter. Brad Pitt is better looking now than then, IMO. As is Leonardo DiCaprio. But Alec Baldwin, much as I love the guy… no. Not improved.

Neither have a few others, but you know, I hate saying negative things about people, stuff that can be hurtful, so just go do your own image search if you’re that curious.

Wait, I have no problem saying something about Jack Nicholson, though in fairness, he was never that good looking to start with, no matter how wonderful an actor he is.

(For the record, I actually do feel somewhat horrible for posting that.)

Thing is, I see the same thing on Facebook, catching up on old friends I haven’t seen since we were teens, or in our early twenties. Now guys, please don’t kill me: you all mostly look like slightly heavier versions of your eighties selves. I actually love the current pictures I see of you, because your characters, your natures are now more apparent on your faces. It’s in fact sometimes downright touching to see.

The ladies, on the other hand, have often only now come into their own. Some average looking girls have grown to be stunning women, and very few have not improved with age.

I wonder if it’s the way women were taught to look after themselves? When I was a teen, special face soaps, moisturisers and hair products were for girls. Not boys. It’s only now that young men are paying attention to these things, and that grooming products for men are readily available.

There was an emphasis on girls looking after their bodies as well, which wasn’t there for the boys. Men would be men, and they got loads of exercise with the plethora of sport available at schools. So when the gals moved on, they were perhaps already used to doing stuff over and above school sport to keep themselves in shape, while for the guys, when there was no more rugby and athletics, there was nothing.

Are you still reading this monster post? I thought I’d lost everyone ages ago. What do you think of all that?
